Above is the Raccoon River choked with ice. This picture was taken about
one mile east of I-35 along Grand Avenue in West Des Moines. The massive ice
chunks caused damage to the Walnut Woods park (across the river from the
picture). When the river went over its banks, the blocks of ice sheared off the
smaller trees.
This is the river a few days later, with the ice jam gone. The river was
still very high when this picture was taken.
